History of the Institute

The institute was first started functioning at Hirakud in the year 1957-1958 with a view to meet the increased demand of crafts man during the 2nd Five Year plan period. On 21-06-1960 the institute was shifted to its own building at Rourkela with intake of 106 trainees. Over the period number of industries came up in & around Panposh, Rourkela making it “The Steel City of Odisha”. Considering the demand of skilled workers at that time in Industries like RSP,OCL, L&T Kansbahal & other small scale Industries, the different trades had been introduced from time to time at Govt. I.T.I. Rourkela.
